7 Daily Habits That Keep Your Smile Healthy
By Dale Audrey, RDH
Everyone wants a healthy smile, but the secret isn’t found in one product—it’s found in the small habits you practice every day.
As a registered dental hygienist with more than 40 years of experience, I’ve learned that simple, consistent routines make the biggest difference over time. Here are seven habits that can help you maintain a healthier smile.
1. Brush Gently Twice a Day
Brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush helps remove plaque and food particles. Brushing too hard doesn’t clean better—it can wear away enamel and irritate your gums.
Tip: Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed.
2. Don’t Skip Flossing
Your toothbrush can’t clean between your teeth. Daily flossing helps remove plaque and food debris from areas your toothbrush can’t reach.
Even flossing once a day can make a difference.
3. Clean Your Tongue
Your tongue can trap bacteria, food particles, and debris that contribute to bad breath.
Using a tongue cleaner or gently brushing your tongue each day can help your mouth feel fresher.
4. Stay Hydrated
Saliva plays an important role in protecting your teeth and gums.
Drinking water throughout the day helps keep your mouth comfortable and supports your natural oral environment.
5. Choose Foods That Support Oral Health
Crunchy vegetables, fresh fruits, dairy products, nuts, and lean proteins can all be part of a healthy diet that supports your teeth and gums.
Try to limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals.
6. Create a Complete Oral Care Routine
Healthy smiles come from consistency.
A daily routine might include:
- Brushing
- Flossing
- Tongue cleaning
- An oil pulling rinse as part of your oral wellness routine
- Regular dental checkups
Small habits practiced consistently can have a lasting impact.
7. Visit Your Dental Professional Regularly
Even the best home care routine should be paired with regular dental exams and professional cleanings.
These visits help identify concerns early and keep your smile looking and feeling its best.
Final Thoughts
There isn’t one magic product for a healthy smile. The best results come from practicing good habits every day.
When you take care of your mouth consistently, you’re investing in your overall health and confidence.
A healthy smile starts with simple daily choices.
