10 Foods That Naturally Support Healthy Teeth And Gums
10 Foods That Naturally Support Healthy Teeth and Gums
By Dale Audrey, RDH
Most people know that brushing and flossing are essential for a healthy smile—but did you know that what you eat also plays an important role?
As a registered dental hygienist with more than 40 years of experience, I’ve seen firsthand how good nutrition and healthy daily habits work together to support strong teeth and healthy gums. While no single food can prevent dental problems, a balanced diet can help give your smile the nutrients it needs.
Here are 10 foods that I recommend adding to your diet to support your oral health.
1. Apples 🍎
Apples are often called “nature’s toothbrush” because their crisp texture encourages chewing and helps stimulate saliva production. Saliva is your mouth’s natural defense system, helping rinse away food particles and keep your mouth comfortable.
Dale’s Tip: Choose fresh apples instead of juice to get the full benefit of their crunchy texture.
2. Carrots 🥕
Raw carrots are packed with vitamin A and provide a satisfying crunch. Chewing crunchy vegetables encourages saliva flow, which helps cleanse your mouth naturally.
They’re also a delicious snack that’s easy to take on the go.
3. Leafy Greens 🥬
Spinach, kale, romaine lettuce, and other leafy greens are rich in vitamins and minerals that support your overall health.
Because they’re low in sugar and calories, they’re an excellent addition to almost any meal.
4. Cheese 🧀
Cheese contains calcium and phosphorus, two important minerals that help support strong teeth.
It’s also a satisfying snack that pairs well with fresh fruit and vegetables.
5. Plain Yogurt
Yogurt provides calcium, protein, and beneficial nutrients that support a balanced diet.
When shopping, choose plain or low-sugar varieties whenever possible.
6. Almonds 🌰
Almonds are naturally low in sugar while providing protein, healthy fats, and minerals.
A handful of almonds makes an excellent afternoon snack.
7. Salmon 🐟
Salmon is an excellent source of vitamin D.
Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, making it an important nutrient for maintaining healthy teeth and bones.
8. Strawberries 🍓
Strawberries are rich in vitamin C, which supports healthy gum tissue.
Fresh berries are naturally sweet and make a healthier alternative to many processed desserts.
9. Celery
Celery contains a high percentage of water and provides plenty of crunch.
Many people enjoy celery with hummus or nut butter as a healthy snack.
10. Water 💧
If I had to choose just one thing everyone could do today to improve their oral health, it would be this:
Drink more water.
Water helps rinse away food particles, keeps your mouth hydrated, and supports your body’s natural production of saliva.
Making water your beverage of choice is one of the easiest habits you can build for a healthier smile.
Foods to Enjoy in Moderation
It’s perfectly okay to enjoy your favorite treats occasionally, but try to limit frequent exposure to:
- Sugary sodas
- Sticky candies
- Sports drinks
- Sweetened coffee beverages
- Highly acidic drinks
If you enjoy these foods or drinks, rinse your mouth with water afterward and wait about 30 minutes before brushing if you’ve consumed something acidic.
A Healthy Smile Starts with Healthy Habits
Good oral health isn’t created by one product, one meal, or one visit to the dentist.
It’s built through small, consistent choices every day.
My daily recommendations include:
✔ Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
✔ Clean between your teeth every day.
✔ Clean your tongue.
✔ Stay hydrated.
✔ Eat a balanced diet rich in whole foods.
✔ Visit your dental professional regularly.
✔ Choose oral wellness products that fit your daily routine.
Dale Audrey's Smile Secret 💗
One of my favorite healthy snacks is sliced apples with a handful of almonds. It’s quick, satisfying, and provides nutrients that support your overall health while helping you avoid sugary snacks between meals.
Small daily choices really do add up over time.
Final Thoughts
Healthy teeth and gums begin long before you sit in the dental chair.
The foods you choose every day help support your overall health—including your smile.
When you combine good nutrition with brushing, flossing, regular dental visits, and a consistent oral wellness routine, you’re giving your smile the best opportunity to stay healthy for years to come.
Remember, every healthy choice you make today is an investment in your future smile.
